🌿 Ginkgo Seeds – A TCM Herb for Astringing the Lung, Calming Wheezing, and Reducing Frequent Urination

Ginkgo seeds are the processed kernels of mature fruits from the ginkgo tree. In TCM, they are traditionally used to astringe the Lung, support chronic cough and wheezing, reduce excessive vaginal discharge, and help control frequent urination. This herb is different from standardized ginkgo leaf extract used in circulation-support products.

Quick information

  • Scientific name / Pinyin / Chinese: Ginkgo Semen / Bai Guo / 白果
  • Flavors, Nature – Meridian: Sweet, Bitter, and Astringent; Neutral and toxic – enters the Lung and Kidney meridians
  • Main benefits: Traditionally used to astringe the Lung, ease chronic cough and wheezing, reduce excessive vaginal discharge, and help control frequent urination.
  • Reference dosage: 5–10 g of properly processed kernels daily in a professionally prescribed formula. Never self-use raw seeds or increase the dose.

1. Origin and description

Ginkgo seeds come from the mature fruits of Ginkgo biloba L., a deciduous tree in the Ginkgoaceae family, recognized by fan-shaped leaves that turn yellow in autumn.

The mature fruit has a soft yellow outer layer with a strong characteristic odor. After harvesting, this layer is removed, and the hard-shelled seed is washed and dried. For medicinal use, the hard shell is opened to obtain the kernel.

The kernel is oval, firm, and ivory-white to pale yellow. Good-quality material should be dry and free from rancid odors, insects, or mold. Raw kernels must not be consumed because they can cause poisoning.

2. Related names of Ginkgo Seeds

Other names: Ginkgo nuts, white nuts, maidenhair tree seeds, Bai Guo, Bạch quả, Ngân hạnh, Áp cước tử, and Công tôn thụ tử.

Scientific name: Ginkgo Semen.

Pinyin name: Bai Guo.

Chinese name: 白果.

The seeds must be distinguished from ginkgo leaves. Standardized leaf extracts are used in some circulation or cognitive-support products, while the kernels are an astringent TCM herb. They cannot be used interchangeably.

3. Flavors, Nature – Meridian

According to TCM, the kernels have Sweet, Bitter, and Astringent flavors, a Neutral nature, and recognized toxicity. They enter the Lung and Kidney meridians.

The Astringent quality is associated with restraining abnormal leakage. Traditional actions are described as astringing the Lung to calm wheezing, stopping excessive vaginal discharge, and reducing frequent urination.

Because the herb restrains and contains, it should not be self-used during an acute illness, when thick phlegm is difficult to expectorate, or when the underlying cause of symptoms has not been identified.

4. Benefits of Ginkgo Seeds in TCM

  • Supporting chronic cough and wheezing: The herb may appear in formulas for persistent cough or wheezing after the individual TCM pattern has been assessed.
  • Astringing the Lung: It may be considered when unstable Lung Qi contributes to a long-lasting cough. It never replaces emergency inhalers or prescribed asthma treatment.
  • Supporting excessive vaginal discharge: It is often combined with herbs that strengthen the Spleen, support the Kidney, and restrain abnormal discharge.
  • Helping reduce frequent urination: Traditional formulas may use it for frequent urination or nocturia associated with unstable Kidney Qi.

These applications belong to TCM theory. Ginkgo kernels should not be used to improve memory or circulation based on claims associated with standardized ginkgo leaf extract.

5. How to use and dosage

Traditional references commonly list 5–10 g of properly processed kernels daily in a professionally supervised formula. This is not a self-treatment instruction.

  • Decoction: Use only properly processed kernels and combine them with other herbs according to a prescription.
  • Pills or powders: Select products that clearly state the amount, preparation method, directions, and toxicity warning.
  • Food preparation: Even cooked or roasted kernels can cause poisoning when consumed in excessive amounts.
  • Storage: Keep tightly sealed in a cool, dry place. Discard kernels with rancid odors, unusual flavors, dampness, or mold.

Never consume raw kernels, drink water used to soak them, or increase the quantity in an attempt to obtain faster results. Cooking may reduce risk but does not make unlimited consumption safe.

6. Indications and contraindications

Indications

Based on TCM pattern differentiation, the herb may be considered for chronic cough, wheezing, excessive phlegm, persistent vaginal discharge, frequent urination, and nocturia. Shortness of breath, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, or rapidly worsening wheezing requires urgent medical attention.

Contraindications and precautions

Do not use raw or excessive amounts. The kernels contain ginkgotoxin, which can interfere with vitamin B6 activity and may cause serious poisoning. Toxic reactions can still occur after roasting or cooking, especially when many kernels are consumed.

Children are more sensitive to toxicity and should never be given the herb without professional supervision. People with a history of seizures, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone taking medicines should consult a doctor or qualified Herb doctor before use.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, agitation, or seizures after eating the kernels require urgent medical evaluation.

7. Reference herbal combinations with Bạch quả

  • Persistent cough and wheezing: Bạch quả may be combined with herbs that transform phlegm and direct rebellious Lung Qi downward in a professionally prescribed formula.
  • Cough with excessive phlegm: It may be paired with Spleen-strengthening and dampness-transforming herbs after the nature of the phlegm has been assessed.
  • Excessive vaginal discharge caused by Spleen and Kidney deficiency: Traditional combinations may include lotus seeds, Chinese yam, and fox nuts.
  • Frequent urination or nocturia: Some formulas combine it with sharp-leaf galangal fruit, mantis egg-case, or Cornus fruit.
  • Traditional wellness foods: Some recipes combine the kernels with lotus seeds or porridge, but unsupervised use is not recommended because of the poisoning risk.

These combinations are educational references, not universal prescriptions.

8. Frequently asked questions

  • Are Ginkgo Seeds the same as ginkgo leaves?
No. This article discusses the kernels. Many circulation-support products contain standardized leaf extract, which is a different preparation.
  • Can ginkgo nuts improve memory?
That conclusion should not be made. Research on cognition mainly concerns standardized leaf extracts, not the kernels.
  • Does cooking completely remove the toxicity?
No. Cooking may reduce risk, but roasted or boiled kernels can still cause poisoning when too many are eaten.
  • Can children eat them?
Do not give them to children without medical or professional guidance because children are more sensitive to toxic effects.
  • Can this herb treat asthma?
No. It cannot replace controller medicines, rescue inhalers, or emergency treatment. Breathing difficulty requires medical care.
  • How can I choose good-quality material?
Choose firm, ivory-white kernels that are dry, free from rancid odors and mold, properly processed, and supplied by a traceable source.
