🌿 Atractylodes Rhizome – A TCM Herb for Drying Dampness, Supporting the Spleen, and Dispelling Wind-Dampness

Atractylodes Rhizome, known in Vietnamese as Thương truật, is the dried rhizome of Atractylodes lancea or Atractylodes chinensis. In TCM, it is traditionally valued for drying Dampness, supporting the Spleen, dispelling Wind-Dampness, and promoting sweating to release the exterior. It is commonly referenced when Dampness is associated with a heavy body, abdominal fullness, poor appetite, or aching discomfort due to Wind-Cold-Dampness.

Quick information

  • Scientific name / Pinyin / Chinese: Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC. or Atractylodes chinensis (DC.) Koidz. / Cang Zhu / 苍术.
  • Flavors, Nature – Meridian: Pungent, Bitter, Warm – Spleen and Stomach.
  • Main benefits: Supports the reduction of Dampness-related abdominal fullness, poor appetite, and body heaviness; also supports discomfort associated with Wind-Cold-Dampness.
  • Reference dosage: 3–9 g daily, commonly prepared as a decoction.

1. Origin and description

The medicinal material is the dried rhizome of Mao Cang Zhu, Atractylodes lancea, or Bei Cang Zhu, Atractylodes chinensis, both belonging to the Asteraceae family. These are perennial plants with underground rhizomes that are harvested and processed for medicinal use.

Atractylodes lancea rhizomes are usually slightly curved, with a grayish-brown outer surface. The broken surface may appear pale yellow or grayish white and often shows visible oil cavities. Atractylodes chinensis is generally larger and somewhat more porous, with a milder aroma. Good-quality material should be dry, firm, distinctly aromatic, and characteristically Pungent and Bitter.

2. Related names of Atractylodes Rhizome

Other names: Thương truật, Mao truật, Xích truật, Nam thương truật, Song truật, Cang Zhu, atractylodes rhizome.

Scientific name: Rhizoma Atractylodis.

Pinyin name: Cang Zhu.

Chinese name: 苍术.

This herb should be distinguished from Bai Zhu. Both belong to the genus Atractylodes, but their traditional emphasis is different. Cang Zhu is stronger in drying Dampness and dispelling Wind-Dampness, while Bai Zhu is more commonly used to strengthen the Spleen and support Qi.

3. Flavors, Nature – Meridian

According to the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia, the herb is Pungent and Bitter in flavor, Warm in nature, and enters the Spleen and Stomach Meridians. In TCM theory, the Pungent flavor supports dispersing and movement, the Bitter flavor is associated with drying Dampness, and the Warm nature is considered suitable for selected patterns in which Dampness is accompanied by Cold.

The Chinese Pharmacopoeia also describes an association with the Liver Meridian and includes traditional use for supporting the eyes in appropriate patterns. When used in Vietnam, local pharmacopoeial standards and professional guidance should be prioritized.

4. Benefits of Atractylodes Rhizome in TCM

  • Dries Dampness and supports the Spleen: Commonly used when Dampness affects the middle burner and is associated with abdominal fullness, nausea, poor appetite, body heaviness, or loose stools.
  • Dispels Wind-Dampness: May be included in formulas for aching joints, heavy limbs, or discomfort associated with Wind-Cold-Dampness.
  • Supports exterior-releasing formulas: Traditionally referenced when external Wind-Cold occurs together with Dampness, producing heaviness, body aches, and little or no sweating.
  • Helps relieve abdominal distension: Frequently included in formulas when fullness and sluggish digestion are linked to Damp accumulation.
  • Traditionally supports the eyes: Some Chinese herbal references describe its use for blurred vision or night blindness when consistent with the overall TCM pattern.

These traditional uses belong to TCM practice and do not replace medical diagnosis or treatment for digestive, musculoskeletal, or eye disorders.

5. How to use and dosage

A commonly referenced amount according to the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia is 3–9 g per day, usually prepared as a decoction. The herb may be used raw or processed, including bran-fried preparations, depending on the purpose of the formula.

Do not increase the amount without guidance. When it is combined with multiple herbs, dosage should be adjusted according to constitution, symptoms, preparation method, and the intended TCM treatment principle.

6. Indications and contraindications

Indications

In TCM, Atractylodes Rhizome may be referenced for Dampness affecting the middle burner, with symptoms such as abdominal fullness, nausea, poor appetite, heaviness, and loose stools. It may also be used for aching discomfort associated with Cold-Dampness or for external Wind-Cold-Dampness patterns accompanied by body heaviness, fatigue, and reduced sweating.

Contraindications and precautions

Because the herb is Pungent, Bitter, Warm, and strongly drying, people with Yin deficiency, insufficient body fluids, pronounced dry mouth, or signs of internal Heat should use caution. Vietnamese TCM guidance also advises that people with high blood pressure should not self-use it without professional assessment.

Pregnant people and those with chronic medical conditions should consult a doctor or Herb doctor before use. Joint pain with marked redness, heat, and swelling, persistent fever, or prolonged abdominal pain requires medical evaluation.

7. Reference herbal combinations with Mao truật

  • Abdominal fullness and poor appetite due to Dampness: The classic Ping Wei San formula commonly combines Cang Zhu with Hou Po, Chen Pi, and Gan Cao to transform Dampness, regulate Qi, and support digestion.
  • Aching discomfort from Wind-Cold-Dampness: May be combined with Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Fang Feng, or other suitable Wind-Damp-dispelling herbs.
  • Damp-Heat in the lower burner: In selected classical formulas, it may be paired with Huang Bai to combine Dampness-drying and Damp-Heat-clearing actions.
  • External Wind-Cold with Dampness: May be combined with exterior-releasing, Cold-dispersing, and Dampness-transforming herbs according to symptoms and constitution.

These combinations are for traditional reference only. Exact proportions and modifications should be determined according to the individual TCM pattern and professional guidance.

  • What is bran-fried Cang Zhu used for? It is a traditional processed form selected according to the needs and balance of a particular herbal formula.
  • How do I choose good-quality material? Choose dry, firm rhizomes with a characteristic aroma, no mold, insect damage, foreign matter, or unusual odor, and clear sourcing from a reliable supplier.
