1. Origin and description

Yellow vine consists of the dried stems and roots of Fibraurea recisa Pierre or Fibraurea tinctoria Lour., plants in the moonseed family (Menispermaceae). These woody climbing vines grow in mountainous areas and along moist forest margins in northern and central Vietnam.

The stem is hard, with a brown outer surface marked by longitudinal grooves. The cut surface is yellow, and the medullary rays resemble wheel spokes. The leaves grow alternately, the flowers are small and yellowish green, and the fruits are oval.

After harvesting, the stems and roots are washed, cut, and dried. Good-quality material has a yellow cut surface, a clearly Bitter taste, and no mold, insects, or excess moisture.
